• Further details: The Turkish National Anthem known as 'Istiklâl Marsi' ('Independence March'), was adopted by the National Assembly on March 12 1921. The text was written by MEHMET AKIF ERSOY (1873-1936). The music was composed by ZEKI ÜNGÖR (1880-1958). It is in G minor in keeping with the character of Oriental music. But otherwise there is little about it that is Oriental. It does suggest Spanish or South American tango tunes.
